About Buteo Studio

HALLO! My name is Isabel. I am so excited to be here and to share my pottery with y'all.

I'm a wildlife biologist working at the intersection of renewable energy development and wildlife conservation, toward a sustainable future for our wildlife, ecosystems, and climate. My background is *mostly* in "bird stuff", but especially in the last 5-6 years, I've worked more and more in bat conservation as well. My love for wildlife has driven my career path, but also my art, and how I spend my time outside (often looking for wildlife).

I make all my pottery in my free time, and I'm super excited about my carved bird and other wildlife pieces. I am based at the Northern Colorado Potter's Guild in Fort Collins, Colorado. Buteo Studio is a one-woman show, and everything I make is a unique and special rainbow :P ! For updates, photos etc, find me on the 'gram!

In addition to my pottery, I love to paint, ride bikes, rock climb, play with my dog, dink around in the garden, and of course, spend quality time with my family and friends. I am also an ARDS survivor (before it was cool, pre-covid) and also an Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia survivor. I like to spend my "Cancerversaries" making a big delicious meal and silly cakes with friends. I always take the day off from work :)

Buteo is the latin name for the genus of hawks which includes the red-tailed hawk, which I studied for three years in college and wrote my undergraduate thesis on. Although I have not worked directly with this species in many years, it holds a special place in my heart and I still think of them as my very own species.
